73.1: The Game of War

Featuring: Donovan, Benkei

[5:39 PM] MadGenius: Donovan, dissapointed with the lack of any real entertainment to be had, decided he had to take matters into his own hands. He went searching among the abodes until he found what he sought: a wide table, along with an assortment of chairs to sit on. He set up the table and chairs in a well travelled spot in camp, where people would notice it easily. Then, from his pack, he pulled out two decks of cards, and set them on the table after shuffling them. He was about to get started, but then remembered something. He went over to where the river flowed by, and began collecting stones of different sizes from along it's banks, putting them into a sack. Returning with the stones, he sat back down and began shuffling and flipping cards, getting his hands used to the precise movements required. Donovan didn't know how many of his comrades actually recognized playing cards, but he figured if he flipped and swapped and did sleight of hand long enough, people would stop and at the very least ask him what the hell he was doing. Hopefully, this would lead to someone playing cards with him. With any luck, he could make it a regular thing (although he dreaded the thought of dragging that table around; maybe there was a horse and cart he could use...)
[5:57 PM] Persoon56: Benkei is stiff from the battle, and coming down from an adrenaline rush, so he's fairly exhausted. So when he sees a strange person from the army doing card tricks...he's confused to say the least, entranced, but confused. "What in the world are you doing...who are you?"
[5:58 PM] MadGenius: "Hah! Name's Flinder, boyo. Donovan Flinder. And these are playing cards!"
[5:58 PM] MadGenius: "You ever play cards before?"
[5:59 PM] Persoon56: "Can I see one of the cards? We play cards in my home, but it may not be the same kind" Benkei outstretches a hand to Donovan
[5:59 PM] Persoon56: "Oh! Where are my manners, my name is Benkei"
[6:00 PM] MadGenius: "Yeah, sure, take a look!" Donovan sets his current deck aside, and hands the other over.
[6:00 PM] MadGenius: "Charmed, Mr.Benkei."
[6:02 PM] MadGenius: "I'm lookin' to find some people to play cards with, Mr.Benkei. I was expecting to have to teach people how to play, but you're more than welcome to join in if you know a few games already!"
[6:03 PM] Persoon56: "Just Benkei." The cards look nothing like what Benkei played with at home, completely foreign. "I'm not familiar with this kind of card, I may have seen it here or there, but I don't know how to play" Benkei hands Donovan his cards back
[6:04 PM] MadGenius: "Oh. Thats a shame, but that's just fine, too! You can learn just the same."
[6:05 PM] Persoon56: Benkei's eyes light up at the phrase, his interest piqued, "Sounds like fun!"
[6:08 PM] MadGenius: "That's the idea! Card games are a good way to pass the time. They're meant to entertain. That's why I thought to do this." Donovan glances at some spot across camp shiftily, where a grove of trees stood, with many vines hanging from them. "...cuz apparently no one else can think of anything."
[6:11 PM] Persoon56: "Fair enough, though I think we've been busy..." Benkei looks around for something to sit on, settling on a chair
[6:12 PM] MadGenius: Donovan ceases shuffling for a moment, a twinkle in his eye. He was glad someone sat down so quickly.
[6:14 PM] MadGenius: "So tell me, Mr. Benkei. How similar are your kind of cards to these? I assume they've still got suits and heirarchy to 'em, and you probably still draw them from a deck, right?"
[6:15 PM] MadGenius: "For the record, these sets are Gallaran playing cards."
[6:17 PM] Persoon56: "Cool. The cards I'm familiar with are divided into 12 types, one for each month. Each month has four cards, each with different point values."
[6:19 PM] MadGenius: "Oh. That's a... what are they called..."
[6:19 PM] MadGenius: Donovan waves his hand dismissvely.
[6:20 PM] MadGenius: "Whatever. I can't remember what it's called, but I know the kind of cards you're talking about."
[6:20 PM] Persoon56: "Hanafuda"
[6:20 PM] MadGenius: "Never played with 'em, though."
[6:20 PM] MadGenius: "Hanafuda, eh? Good to know."
[6:21 PM] Persoon56: "Yup. So what game are you going to teach me?"
[6:23 PM] MadGenius: "I dunno. I'm kinda hoping we get a couple more people checking this out. Card games are generally funner and better the more people you have playing them."(edited)
[6:23 PM] MadGenius: "But I suppose we can have a quick game of War to start us off. That's a simple game to learn."
[6:25 PM] Persoon56: "Okay then, I'm assuming this a more competitive game?"
[6:25 PM] MadGenius: "All card games are competitive!"
[6:26 PM] Persoon56: "Yeah, but some are more...intense, I guess is the word"
[6:26 PM] MadGenius: "But this one is solely based on luck, so I wouldn't call it that competitive."
[6:26 PM] MadGenius: "Nah, not particularly."
[6:27 PM] MadGenius: "Poker is a pretty intense one. Full of mindgames and psychological stuff. That's a fun game, but you need a fair number of people to play."
[6:29 PM] Persoon56: "Deal me in then"
[6:30 PM] MadGenius: "Righto. Lemme just get the rules out of the way, first. The goal of War is to get the whole deck. To begin with, the deck is divided evenly with everyone playing. Then, you draw the first card off the top of your deck. Whoever has the highest card gets everything that's been put down, which then goes to the bottom of your deck."(edited)
[6:31 PM] MadGenius: "Play keeps going until one person has every card."
[6:31 PM] Persoon56: "Sounds like an infinite game"
[7:39 PM] MadGenius: "Nope! Although I know how you might think that. Trust me, it'll make sense when you start playing."
[7:40 PM] Persoon56: "Okay then, let's play"
[7:41 PM] MadGenius: "Now the numbers are self explanatory, they work as listed. But the Jack, Queen, and King are above even 10." Donovan flips through his deck to show examples of each.
[7:41 PM] MadGenius: "With that, let's start!"
[7:42 PM] MadGenius: Donovan shuffles the deck once more, and then divides it evenly between him and Benkei.
[7:43 PM] Persoon56: Benkei picks up his deck and reviews the rules in his head

[9:41 AM] MadGenius: Donovan begins the game of war, demonstrating to Benkei how the cards get replaced back into the decks, and showing what happens when two cards of the same value are played at the same time.
[9:42 AM] MadGenius: The first game ends up with Donovan the victor, but the second game went a fair bit faster, and Benkei was victorious.
[6:55 PM] Persoon56: "Whew, helluva game..." Benkei stands up, stretching his legs and sides. He had known that Hoshido was a very different country to this place, and it seems that the card games are no different. "Are there any other kinds of games around here, Donovan?"

[4:40 PM] MadGenius: "Around here? Pffft. The best anyone else could think of was vine clinging. There's barely anything entertaining to do around here."
[4:42 PM] MadGenius: "I'd suggest dice games if you don't like cards, but I never brought any, and I'm doubtful of anyone else having any."
[4:51 PM] Persoon56: "Yeah, sounds like a better idea than clinging to a vine, might do that later though"

[11:31 AM] MadGenius: ==since neither me nor Persoon RP enough to keep this going reliably, RP end. RIP the card game dream.==
